Various NASA funded studies conducted by Dr. Harry T. Whelan known as "The NASA Light Emitting Diode Medical Program," further demonstrate the minimal differences in therapeutic effect between laser therapy and LED therapy. The studies, which include "Effect of NASA Light-Emitting Diode Irradiation on Wound Healing" and "Effect of NASA Light-Emitting Diode Irradiation on Molecular Changes for Wound Healing in Diabetic Mice" document an increase in collagen synthesis, an increase in cellular growth, accelerated wound healing, reported decrease in pain, and a number of additional positive photobiological effects.
